  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest, or SCA, is when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. Cardiac arrest is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. The person will be unresponsive and will stop breathing or breathe only in gasps. Without treatment, the person can die from SCA within minutes.

A heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked. Heart attacks are caused by a circulation problem. Symptoms may present themselves immediately or may take weeks to appear. A person suffering a heart attack will likely be awake and responsive. Occasionally a heart attack may lead to SCA.

Without help, SCA survival rates are less than 5%. CPR alone may save 7-10% of victims, while CPR and use of an AED increases survival rates to nearly 70%. CPR is a lifesaving technique critical in most emergencies when no breathing or only occasional gasps are detected from the victim. An AED is the only tool available that will shock a heart back into rhythm.
